Overview
Bandung is a favored weekend getaway for Jakarta residents. The city's highland plantation area offers a cooler climate, while its diverse culinary scene and affordable fashion shops in factory outlets and distros attract visitors. Bandung is particularly renowned as a shopping destination, especially for Malaysian and Singaporean tourists, who come for the inexpensive textile and fashion products. In the 1990s,
Jalan Cihampelas became a hub for denim clothing stores, earning the nickname "jeans street." The city's appeal extends beyond Jalan Cihampelas, with factory outlets also opening on Jalan Riau, Jalan Setiabudi, and Jalan Djuanda (known as Dago). These outlets often sell sisa export items, which are rejected or over-produced export quality goods. Bandung boasts several popular shopping centers, including Trans Studio Mall, Bandung Indah Plaza, Cihampelas Walk, Paris Van Java Mall, and 23 Paskal Shopping Center.
In addition to its shopping scene, Bandung offers various tourist attractions. To the north, visitors can explore the Tangkuban Prahu volcano crater, the Kawah Putih volcano lake, and Patenggang Lake, which is surrounded by tea plantations and located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of the city. For a panoramic view of the Bandung Basin amidst its mountainous surroundings, tourists can visit the Bongkor protected forest area, Saung Daweung, and Arcamanik.
Another option is to venture to the slopes of West Manglayang Mountain in the Caringin Tilu area, accessible from Padasuka and Cicaheum to the north. This forest, managed by the government corporation Perhutani, is situated 1,500 meters (4,900 feet) above sea level and is filled with pine trees. It can be reached within a 30-minute drive from downtown. Travelers heading north of the city will also find Taman Hutan Raya Ir. H. Djuanda. Additionally, the Cicaheum area is home to Bukit Moko, a renowned tourist spot known for its breathtaking views.
