- Learn about the Karaites ethnic group that settled in Trakai
Full Description:
Embark on a journey from Vilnius to Trakai, the former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Travel in comfort in an air-conditioned minibus and listen to an informative audio commentary during the 28-kilometer (17-mile) ride. Once in Trakai, you will have 2.5 hours to leisurely explore the historic Old Town.
Marvel at the impressive Insular Castle and the well-preserved ruins of Peninsula Castle, both dating back to the 14th century. Despite falling into disrepair in the 17th century, the Insular Castle has been rebuilt after World War II and is now considered a significant landmark of Lithuania.
During your visit, you will also learn about the Karaites, a small ethnic group that settled in Trakai, as well as the Tartars, Russians, Jews, and Poles who followed. Take in the panoramic views of Lake GalvÄ—, the deepest lake in the region, before returning to Vilnius.
