Alaska Air Group has stated that the increase in checked bag fees is due to rising operating costs

Alaska Airlines recently made a change to their checked bag fees, which has caught the attention of many. Starting from January 2, 2024, passengers flying in Economy class without any additional perks will notice an increase in their baggage fees. The cost of the first checked bag has gone up from $30 to $35, while the second bag will now cost $45 instead of $40. However, the fee for additional bags remains the same at $150 per bag.

Although the increase is only $5, any change in pricing tends to elicit mixed reactions. It's worth noting that Alaska Airlines last adjusted their baggage prices in 2018, introducing a tiered system. Passengers who are entitled to a free checked bag will still enjoy this benefit.

There are, however, some passengers who will be exempt from the increased fees. First-class passengers will still be allowed two free checked bags, and those with the Alaska Airlines Visa or Alaska Airlines Visa Business credit cards will receive a complimentary first checked bag. Elite travelers with MVP Gold 100K and MVP Gold 75K Status, earned through flying a certain number of miles, can have up to three free checked bags on each flight.
