LUXEMBOURG PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
1. Transportation in Luxembourg is primarily facilitated through road, rail, and air. In addition, there are also services available along the river Moselle, which acts as the border with Germany. Over the years, the road network has undergone significant modernization, including the construction of motorways connecting to neighboring countries. The introduction of the high-speed TGV link to Paris has prompted the renovation of the main railway station in the capital, while a new passenger terminal has recently been inaugurated at Luxembourg Airport. Furthermore, the capital saw the reintroduction of trams in December 2017, and there are plans to extend light-rail and tram-train lines to adjacent areas.
2. As of 29th February 2020, all public transport in Luxembourg, including buses, trams, and trains, has become free of charge. This initiative is part of a larger mobility experiment aimed at encouraging walking for short trips, promoting cycling, and significantly increasing the number of people using public transit as the network expands and service frequency improves. The goal is to enhance overall mobility and reduce reliance on private vehicles. This bold move is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and improve accessibility for all residents and visitors.
3. The railway system in Luxembourg, operated by Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL), serves as the backbone of the country's public transport network, connecting major towns and cities. The current operational track length is 274 km (170 mi), although it was much longer, around 550 km (340 mi), at the end of World War II. Regular services are available from Luxembourg City to various destinations, including Ettelbruck, Esch-sur-Alzette, Wasserbillig, and Kleinbettingen. International routes extend to Trier, Koblenz, Brussels, Liège, Metz, and Nancy. The railway network also extends into neighboring countries such as Belgium, Germany, and France, with some services operated by CFL and others by SNCF, NMBS/SNCB, and DB. Additionally, there is now a frequent high-speed connection to Paris via the LGV Est line, and plans are underway for the EuroCap-Rail, a proposed high-speed axis connecting Brussels, Luxembourg City, and Strasbourg.
1. Bus services in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg are quite comprehensive, connecting various towns and villages. These services are managed by the RGTR, which is under the Ministry of Transport. Private operators are contracted to provide these bus services, ensuring efficient transportation for the residents. In Luxembourg City alone, there are 163 AVL buses operated by the Autobus de la Ville de Luxembourg. These buses transport millions of passengers each year and are often easily recognizable by their AVL colors. However, they are also operated by private companies, which are sometimes indicated on the buses themselves.
4. The TICE, also known as the Syndicat des Tramways Intercommunaux dans le Canton d’Esch/Alzette, operates several bus routes primarily centered around the city of Esch-sur-Alzette. While most of these routes are within urban and suburban areas, some extend into the surrounding countryside. Additionally, CFL, the Luxembourg railway company, operates around 17 bus routes that mainly serve towns and villages that no longer have rail services. These bus routes provide essential transportation options for those areas.
5. In addition to the main bus services, smaller cities like Ettelbruck and Wiltz have their own local bus services. These services often extend to nearby villages, providing convenient transportation options for residents. It's important to note that these local services are not part of the RGTR, and national tickets may not always be valid for these routes. However, all transport companies in Luxembourg work together under the Verkéiersverbond, which covers bus, tram, and train routes. As of February 29, 2020, public transport in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has become free for all residents, funded through general taxation. However, first-class tickets can still be purchased for train travel, with options for both short-term and day-long passes.

Vianden
Vianden is a charming little hilltop town located near the German border in northeastern Luxembourg. It is situated in a beautiful setting along the Our River. Visitors are particularly drawn to the carefully restored medieval castle that stands tall above the river, as well as the old-world atmosphere that envelops the town.
The Vianden Castle was built between the 11th and 14th centuries and served as the administrative center of Vianden. It was further developed until the 18th century, but with the departure of the Luxembourg Prince to the Netherlands, along with the impact of fires and earthquakes, it slowly deteriorated. The final blow came in 1820 when William I of the Netherlands sold it to a local merchant who then sold its contents and pieces of stone bit by bit, turning it into ruins. It was only in 1977, when Grand Duke Jean handed over the castle to the State, that large-scale restoration work could be carried out.
Vianden also boasts a cable car that takes visitors up to a restaurant located high above the castle, offering panoramic views of the town and its mountainous surroundings. The Victor Hugo Museum, located near the bridge over the Our River, showcases a collection of letters and original drawings by the writer in the house where he used to live.
Echternach,
Echternach a town near the German border, is the oldest city in Luxembourg with a population of around 4,000 people. It was founded in 698 by St. Willibrord, an English monk who served as the head of the monastery until his death in 739. In honor of him, a dance procession has been held every Whit Tuesday for the past 500 years, attracting pilgrims from near and far. The Romanesque Basilica, with its symmetrical towers, still houses his tomb in the underground crypt. Echternach grew around the monastery walls and was granted city charter in 1236. The monastery was rebuilt in the beautiful Baroque style in 1737. Echternach is also the site of a large Roman villa discovered in 1975 and opened to the public.
This town, still surrounded by medieval walls, hosts the International Music Festival every May and June. It is an ideal starting point for hiking in Mullertal or cycling along the Sure River. Echternach also boasts an interesting Prehistoric Museum.
The Moselle Valley
The Moselle Valler stretches for 42 km (26 miles) from Schengen in the south to Wasserbillig in the north, surrounded by vineyards. The river passes through several towns and small villages along its banks, with narrow streets, wine cooperatives, and annual wine festivals. From south to north, the river flows through Schengen, famous for the European Union agreement that facilitates cross-border travel, Remerschen, Schwebsange, Bech-Kleinmacher, Wellenstein, and Remich, which have been attracting wine enthusiasts since Roman times and are still busy tourist spots with pedestrian areas, parks, river tours, and wine cellars. After Stadtbredimus on the riverbank and Greiveldange on the hills, the Moselle then passes through the charming villages of Ehnen with its Wine Museum, Wormeldange, Ahn, and Machtum, where some of the best restaurants in Luxembourg can be found. Next comes the small town of Grevenmacher before the Moselle meets the Sauer in the bustling border town of Wasserbillig.
Schengen is a significant location in the Moselle Valley, known for the European Union agreement that bears its name. This agreement has greatly facilitated cross-border travel within the EU. Wormeldange is another notable village along the Moselle River, attracting visitors with its picturesque charm and rich wine culture. Remich is a popular destination for wine enthusiasts, with its pedestrian areas, river tours, and wine cellars. Wasserbillig is a busy border town where the Moselle River meets the Sauer River, offering a vibrant atmosphere and plenty of activities for visitors to enjoy.
Others Area Interest
Other areas of interest in the northern part of the country include the Ardennes, which offers great opportunities for adventurers and mountain bikers in its hilly, forested areas, rocky cliffs, and green valleys. The additional attractions are the castles of Bourscheid, Brandenbourg, Clervaux, Esch-sur-Sûre, Vianden, and Wiltz, as well as Lac de la Haute-Sûre, which provides opportunities for swimming and water sports.
Mullerthal, located just north of Echternach, also offers interesting hiking and biking trails through fascinating rock formations, often accompanied by caves. Riders can also experience stunning rural landscapes by driving through river valleys and surprising flat plains above them. Berdorf and Beaufort are popular tourist centers.
In the southern part of the country, Mondorf-les-Bains not only has a range of modern spa and fitness facilities but is also home to the only gambling facility in Luxembourg, Casino 2000. Not far from Mondorf, there is one of the most interesting Roman sites in Luxembourg, Dalheim Ricciacum, with an ancient Roman theater.
