Austria, officially known as the Republic of Austria, is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It consists of 9 states, one of which is Vienna, the capital and largest city of Austria. With a total area of 83,879 square kilometers and a population of nearly 9 million people, Austria shares borders with Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. While the official language in Austria is German, many Austrian residents use Austrian-Bavarian dialect in their daily conversations.
Since 976, Austria has evolved from a margraviate to a duchy and a major duchy in the southeastern Holy Roman Empire. In the 16th century, Austria became the center of government for the Habsburg Monarchy and a branch of the influential Habsburg dynasty in history. As a major duchy, Austria played a crucial role and served as the administrative center of the Holy Roman Empire. After the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, Austria formed its own empire in the 19th century and became a major power in the German Confederation. Subsequently, Austria became an independent country separate from other German states. After the Austro-Prussian War and the compromise with the Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary became a dual monarchy.
Austria was involved in World War I following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. Austria was also the birthplace of Adolf Hitler, who later became the Chancellor of the German Reich. Before Germany invaded Poland in 1939, they briefly annexed Austria through the Anschluss event and seized Sudetenland.
